A big thankyou to everyone who helped in the running of the schools football tournament wich took place on Sunday 21 june it was a great success.
170 children from in and around Abergavenny converged on Mardy Playing Fields to take part in Mardy Juniors FC’s recent ‘schools’ football festival.’
An amazing number of 20 teams from seven local schools, with players aged from seven to 11, played against each other in a friendly competition, testing their skills and stamina as they played a series of matches against children their own age.
Four pitches had to run like clockwork to host all of the matches and despite a few drops of rain, spirits remained high amongst the children and parents alike as they cheered their friends on.
All the participants received a medal as a reminder of their day, and some boys and girls were also awarded “Promising Player” trophies in recognition of their efforts throughout the matches.
Chairman of Mardy Juniors FC Steve Thomas said, “We wanted to have a day to celebrate the talents of our young people, and to encourage more boys and girls to use football as a means to develop themselves not just in terms of their own skills but also in the way they work with other people.
“The day has been a great success. We’re so pleased at the response from schools, with pupils here from Cantref, Crickhowell, Deri View, Gilwern, Llantilio Pertholey, OLSM and Ysgol Gwmraeg Yfennni playing some great football with a lot of friendly rivalry.”
Mardy Juniors are already getting ready for the new season, and on the scout for keen new footballers from the age of six.
